Workshop with Dr. Ysaye M. Barnwell, "Singing in the African American Tradition"
Saturday, Nov. 19, 9:15 - 5:00
Singers and non-singers alike will share the common experience of learning in the oral tradition and singing rhythms, chants, traditional songs from Africa and the Diaspora, and a variety of songs from the African American culture, including spirituals, ring shouts, hymns, gospels, and songs from the Civil Rights Movement. The historical, social, political and spiritual context will provide an introduction to the songs.
In addition to being a scholar, author, composer and actress, since 1979 Dr. Barnwell has been a member of the internationally-recognized a cappella ensemble, "Sweet Honey In The Rock."

Black History Month
Annually in February
Every year our church celebrates our African American cultural heritage in a series of Sunday worship events in February that culminate in Soul Food Sunday. We share a glorious meal as we remember the contribution African Americans have made in American history.
"AFFIRMING OUR FAMILIES" SUNDAY
Annually in June
Once a year in June we support the leadership of our young people in a special Sunday of worship and celebration. Our children share their individual presentations and performances, followed by a wonderful whole family picnic and games.
